Now, it's common knowledge that a number of us Hoodlums, west of the Rockies, have had the honor/pleasure of enjoying Christopher Nyerges' (brother Hoodlum and contributor to the this forum) classes. And almost all of us have his books and video.
Sadly, we Hoodlums on the east coast, can't afford a trip west. :(
But alas!!! Fret not all you MAPS, Porcupines, Pine nuts, and other east coast Hoodlums. Our salvation is at hand!!! There is someone here in the east!!!
And he has his own video for all to enjoy!!!! "Wildman" Steve Brill, the author of "Identifying And Harvesting Edible And Medicinal Plants in Wild (and not so Wild) Places" and "The Wild Vegetarian Cookbook" (side note: try the chicken mushroom recipes, they work well with either regular chicken or regular mushrooms ;) ), has made his own video,,,,,, drum roll please,,,,,,,,,, "Foraging With The Wildman"!!!!
Steve Brill is a forager and naturalist who teaches foraging skills in urban and semi-urban environments. One of the places he teaches in is Central Park, New York City.
Back to the video. His video is the first of a series of videos he plans on making. And this one is a good starter. Firstly, he shows a couple of wild edibles, that have NO poisonous look-alikes (good call ;) ). Also, he shows the equipment a naturalist/ forager uses to gather his edibles (safari helmet optional). And an overview of what to do with what you have gathered (drying, storing, and cooking).
Also, in the tail end of the video, a "short", on ticks and Lyme ticks. Definitely useful for those in the woods!!! :)
I think this is a great start to a series of many videos to come. Definitely worthy to be in any Hoodlum's video library.
Sorry folk!!!! No bugs/grubs are eaten in this video. To my knowledge, Steve is a vegetarian. But if you find 10-20 pounds of chicken mushroom,,,,,,, who needs bugs?????
